Research Projects and Interests:

My Ph.D. research project focuses on developing novel cancer immunotherapies by combining drug-loaded nanoparticles with adjuvant bacteria to help the immune system mount a potent response against cancer lesions that are refractory to immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as late-stage melanomas. The concept of immunotherapy relies on the ability of the immune system to clear mutated cells, yet cancer can evolve sophisticated molecular mechanisms to evade immune recognition and activation. To combat this process, we focus on reactivating immune cells against resistant cancer by developing synthetic and bacterial-derived nanotherapeutics that can locally disrupt immune suppression mechanisms, while at the same time avoiding significant systemic toxicity. The project bridges the biological and physical sciences with the purpose of building novel therapeutic technologies in oncoimmunology.
